If you’re planning to visit Kyoto in July, there’s one event you won’t want to miss—
The Gion Festival (Gion Matsuri), one of Japan’s three major traditional festivals.
Held every year from July 1 to 31, this month-long celebration began over 1,000 years ago as a way to pray for protection from epidemics. Today, it’s a vibrant mix of tradition, music, craftsmanship, and celebration in the heart of Kyoto.
What Are Yamaboko (Festival Floats)?
The Yamaboko floats are massive, beautifully decorated wooden structures that resemble “moving museums.”
Each float features intricate textiles, carvings, and gold leaf—works of art in motion.
The best part?
Before the actual parade, you can see these giant floats up close while they are assembled and on display around Kyoto’s downtown streets!
Float display (pre-parade): Around July 14–16(Saki Matsuri) / July 21–23 (Ato Matsuri)
Float parade (Yamaboko Junko): July 17 and July 24
Magical Nights of Yoiyama
On the evenings of July 15–16 the streets come alive with soft lantern light and the sound of traditional Gion music.
Food stalls, yukata-clad visitors, and glowing floats turn downtown Kyoto into a dreamlike summer wonderland.
A Local Touch – The Festival at Home
For locals, Gion Festival is more than just a parade.
Many families and shops buy “Chimaki” (bamboo talismans) during the festival and hang them at their doors to protect their homes from misfortune for the year.
